Reflexology For Headaches
Reflexology is the modern name given to the ancient technique of massage, which is most usually used on the feet and hands to promote healing, relaxation and feelings of well-being. According to the International Federation of Reflexologists, reflexology is “based on the principle that the anatomy of the body is reflected in miniature on reflex zones on the feet, and also on the hands.”
Causes of Headache
A headache can be caused by a number of different factors. Of these, stress and anxiety resulting in tension, blocked sinuses, migraine and stomach disorders are the most common. Another reason for headache might be fever or an infection caused by a cold or the flu.
Reflexology can help to alleviate some or all of these symptoms, bringing relaxation and relief from pain.
Any unexplained headache that is not alleviated by reflexology or any conventional over-the-counter medicine should always be investigated by a physician to rule out any underlying condition.
Reflexology Techniques
According to MassagEden.com: “Applying pressure to specific zones on the feet and hands is believed to release the blocked energy in the body and encourage the corresponding organs to begin healing and functioning as they should.”
Reflexology is performed by using soothing strokes with the hands over the feet to induce relaxation and then using the fingers or thumbs in a walking motion over specific areas in a set routine, which stimulates the corresponding areas of the body, promoting the elimination of toxins and clearing blockages in the flow of energy.
Treating a Headache
The area of the head is represented on the foot by the big toe; the other toes also represent the head and the sinuses and teeth as well. The crease between the base of the toes and the foot represents the neck, and the area of the foot immediately below the little toe represents the shoulder.
You can treat a headache yourself by finger or thumb walking over each of the toes and up the backs and down the fronts of the toes and thumb walking along the crease between the toes and the foot.
Treating Sinusitis
Reference.com defines sinusitis as: “A common ailment resulting in the inflammation of the paranasal sinuses.” When the sinuses become blocked or inflamed after a cold or because of allergies such as hay fever, the result can be a severe headache. One way to relieve this is to finger walk the toes in the same way as described above.
Shoulder and Neck Tension
Headaches are often caused by tension in the neck and shoulders. When the muscles tense because of stress or anxiety, it often results in pain at the base of the skull, radiating around the head. Says Ali Headache, reflexologist from Margate UK: "To relieve a tension headache, gently massage the feet all over, and then in a circular motion between the thumb and forefinger, massage the area immediately below the little toe.”
